Along the cracked and crop-less landscape on the road between Maun and Francistown, where elephants tear up any tree that dares to raise its head, a large grey hulk looms into sight at the edge of the road – a giant anteater! Follow the side road pointed out by that anteater snout and you will discover the intriguingly named Planet Baobab – a funky oasis in the middle of nowhere.

This is the Baobab capital of the world where the average age of each tree is 4000 years, and the boundless salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, a lunar landscape the size of Switzerland, lie beyond.

You can enjoy game drives onto the salt pans and ride quad bikes into nothingness. A treat is the ability to spend a night sleeping under the stars in the middle of the Pans. Also on offer are walks with the...
